Discover the history, story, and impact of Beltoon.
How does one define a national treasure? For Afghanistan, Momin Khan Biltoon, also called Ustad Beltoon, epitomized the essence of traditional music for over seven decades. Born in the Chakari village of the Khaki Jabbar District, Kabul, he faced hardship early, losing both parents young and being raised by his sister in Logar Province. Despite adversity, Biltoon’s passion for music emerged early, learning the rubab and tanbur, and singing his first song in Dari and Pashto at just 15 years of age. His signature style, rooted in the Kharabat traditions of Kabul, brought Afghan classical music to life. Beltoon became a bridge between Afghanistan’s rich cultural heritage and its modern identity, performing in both Pashto and Dari. Even as times changed, his music served as a reminder of Afghanistan’s deep artistic traditions. Ustad Beltoon passed away at the age of 95 in Kabul, leaving behind a legacy that endures. He rests in Beni Hesar, but his music continues to resonate across generations. Why does his story matter? Because it reminds us that even in the face of loss and hardship, creativity can echo louder than despair.
