The Story of Darul Aman Palace | Shaping Afghanistan

Discover the history, story, and impact of Darul Aman Palace.

Darul Aman Palace, meaning 'Abode of Peace,' is a remarkable neoclassical structure located about 16 kilometers southwest of Kabul, Afghanistan. Built during the 1920s under the reign of Amanullah Khan, who sought to modernize Afghanistan, the palace symbolizes a significant era in the country's history. Designed by German engineer Walter Harten and his team, alongside French architects A. Godard and M. Godard, it was one of the first buildings in Afghanistan to feature central heating and running water, reflecting its modern aspirations.

Initially intended to house Afghanistan's future parliament, the palace's history has been tumultuous. Amanullah's reforms faced resistance, and by 1929, religious conservatives forced him into exile, leaving the building unused for years. Its roles evolved over time, serving as part of Kabul University, a medical school, and later, the Ministry of Defence. Throughout the 20th century, Darul Aman Palace endured damages from fires, coups, and civil conflict, leaving it a gutted shell by the 1990s.

Restoration efforts began in earnest during 2016, involving over 80 engineers, including 25% women, to reclaim its grandeur. By 2019, major renovations were completed in time for Afghanistan's 100th anniversary of independence. Despite its turbulent past, the palace now stands restored, open to the public, and simultaneously carrying historical scars and hopes for Afghanistan’s cultural preservation. Notably, in 2020, it served a critical role as a temporary COVID-19 isolation center, underlining its adaptability and relevance to Afghan society.

Towering atop a hill, this three-story, U-shaped palace with iconic Corinthian columns and spiral marble staircases remains a symbol of Afghanistan's resilience and aspirations for peace and progress. Its illustrious history intertwined with the nation's struggles and triumphs makes it a site of enduring significance.
