The Story of Sarwar Sultana Shaghasi | Shaping Afghanistan

Discover the history, story, and impact of Sarwar Sultana Shaghasi.

Sarwar Sultana Shaghasi, born into the influential Shaghasi family, holds a unique place in Afghanistan’s history as its first queen consort during the modern era. Born to Loinab Sher Dil Khan, a key political figure, she married Emir Habibullah Khan, ruler of Afghanistan from 1901 to 1919. Her official royal title was Serāj-ul-Khawātīn, or 'Lamp of the Ladies.' Among Habibullah’s numerous wives, Sarwar Sultana occupied an elevated position as one of the four principal consorts, reflecting her distinction in the royal court.

As queen consort, Sarwar Sultana became a formidable presence, wielding significant influence, especially over her son, Amanullah Khan, the future king of Afghanistan. Her efforts to prepare Amanullah for the throne were notable, as highlighted by historian Leon B. Poullada. She engaged her family members, particularly her experienced male relatives, to ensure her son’s education and readiness for leadership.

During Amanullah’s reign from 1919 to 1929, Sarwar Sultana took on a prominent role as the king’s mother. She supported his reformist agenda, including initiatives to modernize Afghanistan and improve the status of women. These reforms reached into the royal court itself, such as the dissolution of the royal harem and the liberation of enslaved women. Sarwar Sultana embodied the spirit of this modernization, with her daughters adopting Western fashion, signaling a break from traditional norms.

Swedish memoirist Aurora Nilsson described Sarwar Sultana as influential and dominant, embracing her son’s progressive vision. Nilsson’s accounts detail the queen’s interest in European customs, underscoring her desire to foster a new era for Afghan women.

After Amanullah's abdication in 1929, Sarwar Sultana went into exile. She lived out her remaining years in Istanbul, passing away in 1965. Her legacy persists as a symbol of resilience and reform in Afghan history.
