Panipat: The Decisive Battles of India from Babur to Ahmad Shah Abdali

In April 1526, Babur, the ruler of Kabul, arrived at Panipat with a weary army of ten thousand. He faced Ibrahim Lodi, the Sultan of Delhi, who commanded a force of over a hundred thousand. Despite being outnumbered, Babur prepared for a decisive battle that would change the course of history. The battle commenced with Babur's strategic use of artillery, a novel tactic against Lodi's war elephants. The dust and chaos of the battlefield were overwhelming, but Babur's forces prevailed by midday. This victory not only ended the Lodi dynasty but also laid the foundation for the Mughal Empire. In 1556, the Mughal forces, led by young Akbar and his regent Bairam Khan, faced Hemu's army. Despite Hemu's initial successes, a stray arrow struck him, leading to his army's collapse. This battle solidified Mughal rule in India for over a century. In 1761, Ahmad Shah Durrani clashed with the Marathas, who were unaccustomed to open-field battles. The Marathas suffered a devastating defeat, marking the end of their aspirations in Delhi. This battle paved the way for British influence in India.
